Over the last 15 months I have been sharing music I love with my subscribers. In that time I have profiled ten extremely diverse artists and offered a free song download to subscribers from each of them.
This month I am profiling a performer I am proud to call, not only a dear friend, but also a source of professional inspiration.
Rob E Thomas
Rob began his career in the 60s in Australia as a member of Bobbie Thomas and The Dimensions. On the heels of the Dimensions came Bobbie Thomas and The Beaumen, with whom he scored a Top 10 hit with the single ‘Lavender Blue’
After a short time as Ray Brown’s replacement in the iconic Australian pop group The Whispers, Rob formed The Thomas Brothers and scored another hit with the single ‘Ain’t No Woman’. Continuous gigging followed until Rob took a left turn and auditioned for the prestigious Australian acting school, NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art). Graduating in 1984 he pursued an acting career alongside his singing, appearing on stage and screen across the country.
Last year Rob returned to the legendary Sydney recording institution 301 Studios collaborating with producer Graham Jesse and engineer Brent Clarke to produce one of the finest contemporary big band/swing albums I have ever heard. “Who Am I” masterfully combines the talents of the best jazz musicians Australia has to offer with Rob’s silky smooth vocals, mixed in such a way as to produce a truly ‘live’ analogue sound and feel.
This album plays on high rotation in my life because it’s quality and diversity is so outstanding. From Jazz classics like “The Way You Look Tonight” and “Who Am I” to the Carpenter’s “Close to You” and the classic “MacArthur’s Park”, every track is a treasure. There are so many wonderful tracks on Rob’s album that it is almost impossible to choose which one to gift to my subscribers. We settled on Rob’s version of the Chicago hit “Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is”
